ED ROMAN – DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR
Coach Roman has 44 years of coaching experience, 39 of those years at Amphi High School. Coach Roman, a graduate
of Western New Mexico University (1965), had his first coaching position at Ajo. He has been an integral part of the Varsity staff since Coach Friedli’s second year at Amphi. It is extremely rare in high school football for two coaches to work on the same staff and have the tremendous success they have shared for 33 years as Roman and Friedli. In 2002 Coach Ramon was named the Aflac Varsity Assistant Coach of the Year and in 2003 Amphi inducted him into the Amphi Athletics Hall of fame. “I enjoy teaching young men the game of football. I believe it teaches them to prepare for life in discipline, attitude, and commitment.”
ROY STEWART – OFFENSIVE LINE
Coach Stewart brought seven years of coaching experience to Amphi from Tonopah, Nevada and Seligman, Arizona. A 1989 graduate of Northern Arizona University, he teaches P.E. in Amphi School District and has been on the coaching staff for eight years, first on the Freshman level and moving to the Varsity in 2003. “I enjoy working with the kids! To see them develop their work ethic, sportsmanship, and teamwork!”
ROLAND YOUNGLING – DEFENSIVE LINE
Coach Youngling has13 years as a coach for youth programs and coached for junior varsity last year. He is a graduate of Eastern AZ College and the University of Utah. I have known Coach Friedli since my college football days. I have seen the influence Coach Friedli’s program has on young men. In today’s society, young people are in dire need of positive
role models, and at Amphi they get the best of the best. Being involved in a first class program that prepares young men to be not only good athletes, but more importantly, productive, first class citizens is a priviledge. Coach Youngling is a retired Sgt with the Pima County Sheriff’s Dept.
MIKE GRAVES – LINEBACKER COACH
He’s a Panther!! Mike played at Amphi, graduated & went to Eastern Arizona and then into the Navy. He is an auto paint and body specialist by trade, and has his own business. Mike has coached on the Varsity at Rincon/University High for 4 years prior to coming home to Amphi in 2008. When asked why he coaches, Coach Graves said “Positive influence on young men, smell of the grass, Friday Night Lights and competitiveness.” He feels that the most rewarding thing about coaching here is “coaching with a legendary coach in Vern Friedli, coaching at my high school and being able to help bring Amphi Football back to where it belongs”.
